Infertility affects people from all walks of life, impacting millions of families. Despite the fact that it’s quite common and touches so many (1 in 8 couples struggle with it), for a very long time people treated it as a hush-hush topic and struggled with it in silence. Thankfully, infertility awareness has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Women with infertility are sharing their ups and downs with friends and family, and some very well known women are shining a bright light on the subject.
Nevada Fertility Center takes a look at some of the most high profile women in the infertility community. Their willingness to share their stories is helping raise infertility awareness, which, in turn, can increase research, support, and services for all people who face a difficult road to growing their families.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has helped some of the most well known women in the world realize their dreams of having children. Model/chef/television host Chrissy Teigen has been candid about her and husband John Legend’s struggle to get pregnant. Teigen and Legend found it challenging to conceive naturally, so they turned to IVF to conceive their daughter. After she became pregnant, she shared their struggles with the public and talked about the highs and lows of IVF, the realities of motherhood, and even touched on postpartum depression. The response to some of Teigen’s anecdotes has been mixed, but her honesty has undoubtedly encouraged other women to share their stories. Teigen is now pregnant with their second IVF-conceived baby and has said she wants several children.
Model and actress Jaime King detailed her complicated and painful path, to becoming mom to two sons, via social media, saying “This is the truth about conceiving my son and struggles after 8 yrs of pain and undiagnosed PCOS & Endometriosis…5 miscarriages, 5 rounds of IVF, 26 IUI’s, most with no outcome, 4 ½ years of trying to conceive…I was hiding what I was going through for so long, and I hear about so many women going through what I went through. If I’m open about it, hopefully it won’t be so taboo to talk about.”
The following celebrities have also turned to IVF.
• Brooke Shields
• Celine Dion
• Courteney Cox
• Elisabeth Röhm
• Marcia Cross
• Sherri Shepherd
Countless other women have undergone IVF to help them become mothers. If you think IVF may be right for you, call Nevada Fertility Center at (702) 892-9696 to make an appointment where you can learn more and discuss a personalized treatment plan.
Surrogates & Gestational Carriers
Many women use surrogates or gestational carriers to help grow their families. What’s the difference? A surrogate is someone who donates her egg, which is fertilized via IVF with the intended father’s sperm. The surrogate then carries the resulting embryo. A gestational carrier, however, carries a couple’s fertilized embryo and has no genetic link to the child.
Arguably one of the most well known women in the world, Kim Kardashian conceived her first child naturally, but she and her husband, Kanye West, encountered trouble when they tried for baby #2. Ultimately, they used IVF to conceive their second child. Because she experienced preeclampsia and placenta accreta, Kardashian’s doctors advised her that carrying another child could pose health risks to both mother and baby. That advice led to them using a gestational carrier for their third child.
The reasons for using surrogates and gestational carriers vary, but these celebrities have found it to be the right path to parenthood for them.
• Nicole Kidman
• Sarah Jessica Parker
• Giuliana Rancic
• Tyra Banks
• Angela Bassett
• Jordana Brewster
